Probability And Statistics

If you are a college student, you might have to study probability and statistics in order to complete your degree. While probabilities and statistics are two separate topics, it would be impossible for you to understand statistics without bringing the study of probabilities in to play.

A probability is the likelihood or chance that something is or will be. People use probability theory extensively in the study of statistics, mathematics, science and philosophy to help them come up with conclusions about things they are studying.

Statisticians use probability theory to analyze data that they collect. For example, when A B & C are all present, nine-tenths of the time, ABC occurs, so the probability is high that bringing A B & C together will cause ABC. In this case, a statistician could say, "Statistics show that combining A B & C causes ABC."

Of course, the above example is very simplified and the study of probability and statistics is much more complicated than that, but it serves to give you a basic idea of how probability and statistics are conjoined subjects. In fact, you would need no statistical studies at all if there were no probabilities because without probabilities, everything would already be certain.

Just about every college and university in the country has a section that covers probabilities and statistics. You will need to understand the study of probabilities and statistics if you wish to be a physician, a mathematician, advertising agent, market research analyst or several other professions.

One interesting use of statistical information is in the field of paranormal phenomena. In this field, people interested in finding people with precognition, telepathy or psycho-kinesis abilities use probability and statistic studies to do so. If a person can guess the outcome of a coin toss 600 out of 1000 times, these statisticians believe such a person probably has paranormal abilities.
